5 Star Book Review – Write Your Novel by Maggie James

Write Yoyr Novel
5 stars icon A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO STARTING AND FINISHING THAT FIRST NOVEL.

I’m a fan of Maggie James’s well crafted psychological suspense novels. Her foray into non-fiction with “Write Your Novel! From getting started to first draft”, is exceptional in the crowded how-to-write and writing tips field, due to its focus on building self-confidence and overcoming the self-imposed impediments to getting started. Its advice, derived from the author’s own writing journey, is practical, easy to follow, and logically laid out in concise chapters containing an “action plan” at the end of each chapter.

The Chapters progress through “Ditch the excuses,” “Planning and preparation,” “Finding help and support,” “Dealing with procrastination,” to my favorite, “Improve your writing,” a must for novice writers learning the craft. It includes a primer on the important steps following completion of the manuscript, namely editing, publishing and marketing, and provides resources for further reading to improve language and creative writing skills, plotting, and other areas involved in writing, editing, publishing, and marketing a novel.

Anyone who has wanted to write, but lacked the confidence or wherewithal to get started, “Write Your Novel” will not only encourage and guide you in taking that critical first step, but also provides the steps to get you across the finish line.

Sounds great. I like the chapter headings–Ditch the Excuses (isn’t that what too often stops writers?), Dealing with Procrastination (ah, my silent partner…).

  • This is a great little guide I’ve been suggesting to some friends who are mid-way into their first books and they have found it “very helpful, and rather witty”. Though I’ve not actually read it myself and just spotted it one day, their reviews have made me actually want to read it now! Thank you for sharing your review ❤️.
